The Bahia Principe Resort in Riviera Maya Mexico is a complex of four different resorts. It is located about 80 minutes south of the Cancun airport. The four different resorts in the complex are:
Grand Bahia Principe Tulum – families
Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal Don Pablo Collection – families
Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an Don Pablo Collection – adults only
Each resort has its own lobby, pools and restaurants. Guests of the Grand Bahia Principe Coba can use the facilities of the Grand Bahia Principe Tulum but not those of the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal or the Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an. Because this resort complex is so large we ended up using the shuttle trams several times a day. It was too far to walk and you had to be alert to avoid getting run over by the trams and maintenance trucks which shared the same walkways. The complex includes many acres of land across the freeway accessable by their own bridge. This is where the adults only Luxury Bahia Sian Ka’an Resort and golf courses are located.
The standard rooms at the Grand Bahia Coba look very similar to the ones at the Luxury Bahia Akumal where we stayed. Since the Grand Bahia Coba is a considerable distance from the beach even a third floor room will not provide an ocean view. There are no elevators in the buildings. Shuttle trams run constantly to/from the beach but are often full. You can walk but it will take 10 to 20 minutes depending which building your room is in. As mentioned in the Luxury Bahia Akumal review, the entire resort complex is exceptionally clean and well maintained.
Like the Bahia Akumal the buffet food was only fair but had a good selection. Also, like the Bahia Akumal resort, the service at the Bahia Coba buffet was not very good. However, dinners, food and service, at the speciality restaurants were excellent. Maybe the best we have ever had at a resort. Reservations are required. We strongly suggest making dinner reservations the first day for your entire stay or you may end up eating at the buffet every night.
The kiddie water park at the Bahia Principe Coba resort complex is very nice. There is a shaded area next to it with tables and chairs for parents to sit and watch their kids. The other pools are very large with plenty of deck chairs. At night they have music in various lobbies and live shows in the theatre. The Michael Jackson show was just okay.
The resort grounds through out the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya complex are very beautiful. The beach is rocky in many parts, however, there are a few good sandy areas but good luck finding a lounge chair near them. Otherwise lounge chairs were fairly easy to find at the beach and pool. No seaweed problem here because they have placed huge sandbags out about 30 yards off shore. The sand bags keep the seaweed and surf down, however, they spoil the ambiance and ocean view. You can swim with the Dolphins at the Bahia Principe Tulum complex nearby. If you take one of the shuttle trams you can visit their small casino as well as the Bahia Hacienda town square with many small shops.
If easy beach access is not that important to you then this might be the resort for you. However, if you don’t like a lot of kids around you might want to choose a different resort. The Luxury Bahia Akumal had far fewer kids around even though it is for families also. Probably due to the pricing difference. The large size of the Bahia Principe complex will not appeal to those who do not like to walk. However, the large size makes it interesting to explore the different areas of the resort complex. In some ways the Grand Bahia Coba is more appealing than the Luxury Bahia Akumal.
