The Bahia Principe Resort in Riviera Maya Mexico is a complex of four different resorts. It is located about 80 minutes south of the Cancun airport. The four different resorts in the complex are:
Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal Don Pablo Collection – families. Subject of this review.
Luxury Bahia Principe Sian Ka’an Don Pablo Collection – adults only
Grand Bahia Principe Coba – families
Grand Bahia Principe Tulum – families
Each resort has its own lobby, pools and restaurants. Guests of the Luxury Bahia Principe Akumal can use the facilities at all of the other resorts in the complex. The Bahia Principe complex is the largest resort complex we have ever stayed at or seen. Because it was so large we ended up using the shuttle trams several times a day. It was too far to walk and you had to be alert to avoid getting run over by the trams and maintenance trucks which shared the same walkways. The resort complex is going to get even larger as they have many home and condo lots for sale. It also includes many acres across the freeway accessable by their own bridge which has more land than the other three resorts combined. This is where the adults only Luxury Bahia Sian Ka’an Resort and golf courses are located.
The rooms at the Luxury Bahia Akumal are nice but just a little bit smaller than most resorts in Riviera Maya and Punta Cana. We requested a first or second floor room because there are no elevators, however, you will need to be on the third floor in most buildings to see the ocean over the vegetation. Bed comfort, room cleanliness and maid service were good. In fact, the entire resort complex was exceptionally clean and well maintained. Villa 47 would be our choice next time… better views and great location.
The buffet food was fair but with a nice selection, however, some things were left out too long and they ran out of items often and were slow to replenish. The service at the buffets, especially, in the morning was very poor our entire stay. However, dinners, food and service, at the speciality restaurants was excellent. Maybe the best we have ever had at a resort, especially the Brazilian and the Japanese Hibachi restaurants. Reservations are required. We strongly suggest making dinner reservations the first day for your entire stay or you may end up eating at the buffet every night.
The resort grounds through out the Bahia Principe Riviera Maya complex are very beautiful. The beach is rocky in many parts, however, there are a few good sandy areas but good luck finding a lounge chair near them. Otherwise lounge chairs were fairly easy to find at the beach and pool. No seaweed problem here because they have placed huge sandbags out about 30 yards off shore. The sand bags keep the seaweed and surf down, however, they spoil the ocean view and ambiance. The Bahia Principe Tulum complex, nearby, has a pool called Dolphinaris where you can swim with the Dolphins.
If you take one of the shuttle trams you can visit their small casino as well as the Bahia Hacienda town square with many small shops. There was also a very nice kiddie water park at the Bahia Principe Coba resort complex. At night they have music in various lobbies and live shows in the theatre. The Michael Jackson show was okay but not as good as the one at the Bahia in Punta Cana.
We really liked this resort because of the grounds and the dinner restaurants. The service was very friendly and generally good except for the buffets. The large size of the Bahia Principe complex would not appeal to those who like to be close to the pool, beach, lobby, etc. However, the large size kept it interesting as we explored the different areas of the Bahia resort complex.
