Outrigger Reef on the Beach review
The Outrigger Reef on the Beach is located on the Waikiki beach which is on the south shore of Honolulu, on the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. Oahu is the island where Pearl Harbor and Diamond Head are located. Like almost all hotels in Waikiki the Outrigger Reef on the Beach is a multi-floor high rise, in this case 17 floors which was the floor we were on. It is perpendicular to the ocean so most rooms face the neighboring high rise hotel. However you can see the ocean by looking to your left or right depending on which side of the hotel you are on. If you look the other way you see dozens of other high rise buildings that make up the city.
At first we didn't think we were going to like this hotel because of the proximity to the city... not exactly the picture most have when they think of Hawaii. However, within a few hours we realized this was going to be a fun place to be. You have the beach and sun by day and excitement of the city at night. You can easily walk to many night spots, shops and restaurants. The city of Waikiki has a great tropical atmosphere and is very clean and safe. There are not many cities where you see people in bathing suits carrying surf boards walking down the street as city buses pass by.
The beach at the Outrigger is not very big but it is well maintained with no rocks, seaweed and there are great views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head both day and night. A couple mornings a week they perform a vow renewal ceremony on the beach that couples can sign up for. During the day there are dozens of surfers, mostly beginners, that you can watch from the beach or the beach side restaurant. Since all beaches in Hawaii are public you can walk to any nearby hotel and enjoy their beach if you wish although the lounge chairs belong to the individual hotels.
The pool area did not get a lot of use during our stay. The pool is sandwiched in between two high rise hotels so it is shaded except for mid-day. Though I would think that on windy days it would be a good place to soak up some sun.
The Outrigger Reef on the Beach has 3 restaurants. We found the food and the service to be good. We especially liked having breakfast at the beachside restaurant... great views of the beach, the ocean, surfers and Diamond Head. Also, there are many fine restaurants nearby that you can easily walk to.
